DROPPING PANTIES – BASSIDE {NEW MUSIC FRIDAYS/INTERVIEW}

Basside 20

Carolina “Caro-Loka” Villalba and Linda “Que-Linda” Attias have been making beats and free style raps since their early teens. For the past couple of years their rap duo BASSIDE has taken Miami and New York by storm, dropping jaws and panties of everyone that meets their path. From their first shows in small Miami indie clubs like former White Room and Bella Rose, to hitting the hipster circuit in modern day Brooklyn at Baby’s Alright this pair has taken major strides in making their act just as tight as their bodies. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing these babes since we were little darlings in our early teens, getting high and making mischief with our crew. You might remember them from playing our Nakid Magazine Issue III Release Party at Libertine Miami during Basel. For this special edition of New Music Fridays I will give you all of the dirt these locas gave me while they were getting clean.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND BASSIDE?

CaroLoka : Besides the obvious ..big hair and the most unique and strong fucking friendship between Que-Linda and Caro-Loka…Basside was first inspired by: Le trimm , beastie boys..MD20/20s , strawberry Ciscos. Tapered jeans cut into booty shorts ..hot long summer nights and wet short summer days. Hi hopes like a mini skirt. Lill dirty ..totally flirty and thriving. These are a few of the ingredients that make the perfect recepie for BASSIDE.

Que Linda: We started Basside when we were in high school, we would ride our bikes everywhere before we had cars (and before Miami was even safe for biking) and we would always come up with chants and rhymes to the rhythm of the ride. once we had a catchy hook that would get us from point a to point b, we realized that we may not be the only people who would be into it. we started writing songs as a joke, as we had idolized my sister Debbie (from avenue D) and were obsessed with the whole electro-clash scene that was booming at the time, we figured we could perform too, just with a little more miami “umph”; we really loved old miami music like free style and miami bass; hence the name “basside” based on the oh-so-iconic stuck-in-the-90s shopping mall in the heart of downtown.

we figured, it’s a cute name if your not from miami, but a dope inside joke if you are from miami.

WHERE DO YOU GUYS DO MOST OF YOUR WRITING?

CaroLoka : Around 2-5am lill high…riding bikes or our penny boards to or from the party

Que Linda: Everywhere really, on bikes, in the car in traffic, while were skating, when were high, it’s tough living in different cities, but we’re pretty much always face-timing and on the phone, and when either of us gets an idea, we write verses on our own and then bring them together and tweak them when we’re together or on facetime.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE MUSIC?

CaroLoka : Nothing compares to the way we feel when we are on stage. Personally I feel extremely lucky that I get to jump and dance up and down with my fav person in the world while everyone else joins in and has a blast. We wanted to give people that feeling..when u hear that song and u juts ..u juts ..gotta put your purse down and find your bff to get lit with.
Que Linda:I get inspired by listening to music in general, I’ve never been one to talk about “what kind of music i listen to” for me it’s always been “whatever makes me dance”.
knowing now how fun and thrilling it is to create, to perform, to make OTHER people dance, its a really good feeling and definitely keeps me motivated to continue to produce.

THOUGHTS ON THE MUSIC SCENE IN MIAMI?

CaroLoka :We feel like bass is making a big come back and Miami is getting really noticed in the last years ..we have a lot of potential to keep on growing.

Que Linda: Miami is seriously starting to crush it. I’m not there as much as I’d like to be but everything I keep seeing me is making so excited and proud of all the homies!
